De Vaucouleurs Atlas Description:

NGC 1537 is a peculiar early-type galaxy that at first sight appears to possibly have a bar. However, the appearance is more that of an E galaxy with significant isophote twisting. Nieto et al. (1992) include NGC 1537 in a list of E galaxies with isophote twists of 20o or more. They compare galaxies like NGC 1537 to well-defined SB0 galaxies and conclude that there is continuity between twisted Es and SB0s.
