De Vaucouleurs Atlas Description:

This complicated system may have extraplanar distortion. An s-shape is dominant, but the arms and bar-like region are very broad. The dust distribution is complex and very strong in the northern arm. Mihos and Bothun (1997) studied the kinematics of NGC 2442 and concluded the galaxy has suffered a gravitational encounter with a low mass companion, AM0738-692 (Arp and Madore 1987), located approximately 10 arcminutes to the east.
