De Vaucouleurs Atlas Description:

This peculiar system is believed to be a collisional ring galaxy (Higdon et al. 1995). The southern component, NGC 2445 , is the disturbed multi-knotted section, while the elliptical to the northwest, NGC 2444 , is thought to be the intruder galaxy. Higdon et al. (1995) suggest that the system is a ring galaxy in formation, too young for the organized ring to be seen and for large numbers of massive stars to be present. Collisional ring galaxies are further discussed in book section 2.17.5.
