De Vaucouleurs Atlas Description:

NGC 2997 is an excellent grand design Sc spiral. In some respects it resembles NGC 4321 in having a spotty nuclear region (Sersic and Pastoriza 1965, 1967). The B-V color index map shows that the central region includes a star-forming nuclear ring (see also Elmegreen et al. 1999). Strong, curved dust lanes connect to this region in much the same way as in a barred galaxy. We suspect a weak oval in NGC 2997 , and recognize it using the underline notation .
