De Vaucouleurs Atlas Description:

This close pair is a local merger in progress. It includes two distorted disk galaxies showing considerable evidence for strong interaction. It is known as a luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) because of its strong infrared emission due to excessive amounts of dust warmed by a starburst . HI tidal tails have been detected (Hibbard and Yun 1999).
