De Vaucouleurs Atlas Description:

NGC 4085 is very similar to NGC 253 and NGC 3917 in having a disk riddled with dust patches and lanes. The spiral structure is mostly disorganized. The Sc type is based on the disk patchiness and the very small size of the core.

NGC 4085 is a companion to the brighter spiral NGC 4088 .
