De Vaucouleurs Atlas Description:

The planar dust lane is very thick and complex in this galaxy. The bulge appears weak and has low contrast against the bright stellar disk. Howk and Savage (1999) show that NGC 4217 has extraplanar dust that is weakly evident in the Atlas image, away from the main dust lane.
