De Vaucouleurs Atlas Description:

The bar in NGC 4535 is a well-defined oval with leading dust lanes that curve sharply before the spiral arms break from the bar ends. The bar is a very good SAB type. The (s) classification is based on the two main inner arms. Farther out, the spiral structure becomes more multi-armed. Although not visible in the Atlas image, the central region includes a small nuclear ring (Benedict et al. 1977; Buta and Crocker 1993a). The small core, high degree of resolution of the arms, and the very open outer arm pitch angles are characteristic of stage Sc.

NGC 4535 is a member of the Virgo Cluster and has a normal star formation rate according to Koopmann and Kenney (2004).
