De Vaucouleurs Atlas Description:

The Atlas image of these galaxies, the dominant members of the Coma Cluster (A1656), is very deep. These galaxies are classified as E+ because they show faint extended envelopes. Neither has been classified as cD, but both are good examples of giant elliptical galaxies . As dominant cluster members, NGC 4874 and 4889 are 20 or more times larger than the average cluster member. The origin of these exceptional objects may lie in cluster merger processes (e.g., Schombert 1987).
