De Vaucouleurs Atlas Description:

NGC 4939 is a large global, multi-armed spiral with a weak central bar surrounded closely by a low contrast inner ring . The morphology of the bar and ring is similar to that in NGC 6384 . In both cases, the apparent bar-like feature lies approximately along the photometric major axis, and also significantly underfills the inner ring . The outer spiral pattern is dominated by two major arms with some asymmetry . The character of the arms, and the strength of the bulge, favor the Sbc classification.
