De Vaucouleurs Atlas Description:

Apart from being an exceptional ``grand design " spiral, NGC 5054 is noteworthy for having a dominant three-armed pattern. In the dust-penetrated system of Block and Puerari (1999), the classification of NGC 5054 is given as H3-gamma (Block et al. 1999a), meaning the dominant harmonic is m=3 and the arms are of the open pitch angle class gamma.
