De Vaucouleurs Atlas Description:

The classification of this galaxy as Sm is based on the high degree of resolution of the disk and the weakness of the spiral features; the system is close to being an irregular. The spiral structure is largely ill-defined but the galaxy is relatively symmetric. Although the inner regions are complex, we can distinguish no clear bar in this system.

NGC 5204 has been studied kinematically and photometrically by Sicotte et al. (1996) and Sicotte and Carignan (1997), who show that dark matter is important even in the bright inner regions of this low luminosity galaxy.
