De Vaucouleurs Atlas Description:

We interpret NGC 678 as an edge-on Sa. This follows from the large size of its bulge and the relative smoothness of its disk. The galaxy is not exactly edge-on since the nucleus is visible. The stellar disk is extensive but faint, and is affected by the complex dust lanes. NGC 678 has a close binary companion, NGC 680 .
